I ended up not really going with any of my original ideas for this project. I did end up going to a few thrift stores, and I found a frying pan that I was going to use. However, I just couldn’t think of what I wanted to project onto it, so I ended up scraping that idea. I wound up using a shadowbox I had gotten that I originally was just going to save for a different project. However, then I realized I had a handful of unpainted Dungeons and Dragons miniatures, and my idea for this project was born. I painted the miniatures I had, though sadly one of them was ironically too big for the box, so that one didn’t get used in the end. I used Procreate on my iPad to animate a pixel art background of a forest scene with leaves falling to serve as a backdrop for this staged fantasy encounter. It was nothing super fancy, but I think the simplicity of the background and the scale of the project as a whole really allowed me to have a lot of fun with what I was making and have it feel like the viewer is peering in on this little fantasy setting. I’m really happy with how it turned out, even if it wasn’t at all what I originally thought I would make for this project. Working with the projection mapping software was also pretty fun, and though I am a bit bummed I wasn’t able to use VDMX due to not having a Mac, I still really enjoyed all of this. The art show was a great experience as well, and I hope to be able to do more shows in the future.
