If it Wasn’t Created by a Human Artist, is it Still Art? Is an article written by a Harvard staff writer by the name of Liz Mineo. Mineo interviewed several different artists of all different types for their opinions on the matter. Mineo spoke to a writer, animator, architect, musician, and mixed-media artist to get a feel for how different types of artists and professionals felt about AI generated art. The consensus was pretty mixed, with some of these individuals feeling that AI art lacked the emotion and humanity that humans put into art, and others viewing the issue with the perspective that AI generated art provides challenges for human artists and can act as a tool for humans to make more art, just as any other art tool.

Personally, I can see where both sides are coming from. I think when used in the right context, AI has potential to act as a great tool for artists. However, I do think that when AI is used to replace artists, that’s where major issues arise. Large industries have started trying to use AI as a means for free labor rather than hiring artists, designers, animators, musicians, etc, and we end up with stuff that just can never achieve the creativity and depth that humans can put in art. So yes, I do think AI has its merits, but I also think that when it is used in the wrong way or context, it just can’t produce art the way humans can.
