Brainstorm Blog #3

For this project, I had a few different ideas, but ultimately, I think I want to use one of my ideas that was inspired by one of the example videos we saw in class. I want to use the idea of falling asleep and “waking up” (dreaming) that I’m in a video game. Originally, I wanted to use one of the games in the Resident Evil series because those are probably my all-time favorite games. However, I think trying to work with a high-resolution, first-person shooter game from a AAA studio would be too ambitious for the skills I have and will learn for this project. I’ve decided instead to use the same premise, but instead use one of the older pokemon games. I think working with a simpler pixel-art style will end up being both easier and create a more satisfying final product.

For the basic layout illustrated in the storyboard below, I think that I will have the main character (most likely myself) playing pokemon on a DSi, and then fall asleep or blink and “wake up” in the game as a pokemon trainer. I will create a sprite (most likely) to superimpose over the animation of the game, catch a few pokemon or battle a trainer or gym leader, and then I think I will have the character enter one of the tunnels and wake up back in the real world, maybe coming out of some sort of tunnel or overpass.

I might also use the game Pokemon Infinite Fusion (fangame) to add another layer of abstraction/weirdness, as the pokemon are fused with each other and look kind of goofy and strange, which I think could be fun to play with in the animation.
