Reviewing Visual Literacy in the "Bain d'Images" Era by Maria D. Avgerinou is an interesting publication about visual literacy in this era where we are surrounded by a constant flood of visual media in the form of tv and the internet. The author talks about how even though the current generations are surrounded by images and other forms of visual media, they don't necessarily have the skills or ability to analyze what they are viewing. Visual literacy comes in multiple parts-- you have to be able to see, comprehend what you are seeing, and understand if there is something deeper than the surface level media.

The author continues to speak on this for a while, and while I won't put everything they said here for the sake of time, I do think they bring up some really interesting points. Basically, half of seeing is also understanding what you're seeing, and being able to comprehend it. This is a skill that has been widely necessary for written media literacy, but for this new age of visual media, not many people are realizing that this skill needs to carry over and be altered to fit the style of media. It's just as important to understand what you're seeing as understanding what you're reading, especially with the way information is presented nowadays.

The text definitely goes into much more detail that I can in this post, but it really is a fascinating topic that I hope to be able to look into and learn more about in the future.
